Academic interests
I am interested in conducting interdisciplinary research on the various ways in which translation impacts and shapes cross-cultural communication. One of my main research areas lies at the intersection of critical discourse analysis and corpus-based translation studies: I draw on corpus data and tools of analysis to explore the discursive patterning of translated text, and on critical discourse analysis as a source of theoretical insight to analyse the extent to which such patterns consolidate or undermine certain discourses and reproduce or deconstruct existing power structures in the target society. My second main research area is multilingualism in audiovisual translation and streaming, which has implications for how the linguistic inequalities and hierarchies that dominate Eurocentric and Anglophone-led global media systems are reflected or reconfigured.
As an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education, I am working on the development of the Oslo Medical Corpus and examine how different epidemics/pandemics have been narrated, the conflicts they have given rise to, and forms of contestations that have emerged in the context of these conflicts. I have taught postgraduate and undergraduate courses on translation theory and corpus-based translation studies.
Background
I have a BA in English language and literature from Sookmyung Women's University (2006), an MA in English Translation from Sookmyung Women's University (2007, BA-MA combined co-terminal programme), MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies from the University of Manchester (2009), and a PhD in Translation and Intercultural Studies from the University of Manchester (2013).
