Time schedule: The Economics of Hospitals

Each day will involve 2 hours of teaching + 1 hour of seminar where the lecturer will ask questions to students in relation to material covered + 1 hour students’ presentations: these could include either a study from the reading list or a phd chapter the student is currently working on.

Empirical models will cover cross-sectional, panel-data models, IV approach, and natural experiments which test the effect of competition (eg market structure) on quality of care.

  • Mergers
  • A spatial econometrics approach to competition

Wednesday

Provider choice and quality: Empirical Models

DRG price incentives and Pay for Performance:  theory and empirical evidence

Thursday

Hospital ownership and quality differences between for-profit, non-profit and public hospitals: theory and empirical evidence

  • Theoretical models
  • Empirical models: methods and key empirical results from US and other EU countries

Friday

Waiting times: theory and empirical evidence

  • Theoretical models: waiting times as an equilibrating mechanism between demand and supply
  • Empirical models: methods and key empirical results
