We have three state-of-the-art calorimetry rooms to measure energy expenditure at rest and at different activity levels. While the person is inside the calorimetry room and breathing freely, fresh inlet air will flow through the room. The concentrations of O2 and CO2 are measured both in the inlet air and in the outlet air, and these values are used to calculate energy expenditure.
The first room measures resting metabolic rate, the second room measures energy expenditure during physical activity, and the third room measures energy expenditure over a 24-hour period.
